Montreal Canadiens vs Buffalo Sabres Prediction & Betting Tips - NHL

An Atlantic Division matchup in the early hours of Thursday morning as the 22-25-8 Montreal Canadiens host the 24-27-4 Buffalo Sabres. Both teams are tied on 52 points in the standings from where even a run of 10 straight wins might not be enough to see them in a playoff spot. In the bottom eight for goals scored and bottom three for goals conceded, there has been little to cheer in Montreal this season. In 2024 they've been beaten at home by both the San Jose Sharks and the Ottawa Senators, teams they should be beating. Conversely, they have beaten the New York Rangers and the Colorado Avalanche so they are capable when they want to be but seem to get up for the bigger games but not the lesser ones. A young team led by Nicky Suzuki and Cole Caulfield, they could do with some more bright sparks in the darkness.
The Sabres' 42 wins last year was the most since the 2010/11 season but they have taken a step backwards this campaign. A huge part of that is Tage Thompson. A 47-goal, 94-point season in 2022/23 dwarfs what he has done this year, on course for 26 goals and 51 points this time around. That is an enormous dropoff from their star player. Rasmus Dahlin continues to shine on the blue line for Buffalo, already a career-high in hits this season, and he will set a new career-high in blocked shots as well to go along with around 63 points if he continues his current pace. They have played well on the road in 2024 and will be hoping that continues back at a venue that saw a big win the last time they were here.
