Arguably the NHL’s fiercest rivalry reignites on Tuesday when the Boston Bruins head to the Bell Centre to take on the Montreal Canadiens. Boston has been the class of the NHL this season and have been completely steamrolling through the season so far. They have a record of 37 wins, five losses and four overtime defeats and have racked up the league’s best goal differential at +81 through their 46 games played. Boston’s 78 points on the season puts them 12 points ahead of the second and third best teams in the NHL who are sitting on 66 points each. The Bruins last outing ended in a 4-0 victory against San Jose, extending their winning streak to five games. Boston’s defense has been superb this season and their recent shutout against the Sharks was their second in their last four games. The Bruins defense is far-and-away the best in the NHL with only 96 goals conceded so far; the next highest is New Jersey with 121 goals conceded.
The Canadiens have been on a decent run of form lately but remain rock-bottom of the Atlantic division. Montreal have managed 20 wins so far this season as well as 24 losses and three overtime defeats. They’ve accumulated 43 points, putting them even with the seventh-place Senators but trailing them on goal differential. The Canadiens were able to grab a win over the Maple Leafs 4-3 in overtime in their last outing, meaning that they have now won five of their last 10 games and three of their last four. They’ll be put to the test here against their bitter rivals in the first of three meetings scheduled between these two teams. Boston sweeped the season series last year, winning all four games by a combined score of 17-8 with a shootout victory thrown in. The Canadiens are 0-8 against Boston in their last eight meetings and they haven’t beaten the Bruins since November of 2019.
