Mirra Andreeva will hope to continue with her stunning Australian Open start when she next takes on fellow unseeded player Diane Parry. The two will battle in the third round with the winner setting up a fourth-round showdown with either Barbora Krejcikova or Storm Hunter. After a promising 2023 season, Mirra Andreeva has picked up from where she left off. The young Russian has been one of the in-form players at tour level and has so far won five of six matches. She earned the biggest win of her career in the second round as she defeated sixth seed Ons Jabeur in straight sets. It was a dominant victory against the multiple Grand Slam finalist as she only relinquished two games. Andreeva, who is making her Melbourne debut, is now up 12 places to a career-high 35th placing in the live ranking. She defeated Parry in their only previous encounter last season at the French Open.

Diane Parry had never gone past the first round at the Australian Open before. She is now one win away from recording her best-ever result at a Grand Slam. The Frenchwoman will be confident of her chances of progressing as she has had a strong start to the year. Parry has won four of the five fixtures she has so far contested. Before arriving in Melbourne, she recorded a quarterfinal finish in Auckland. The 21-year-old defeated 30th seed Wang Xinyu in the first round and then fellow unseeded player Kamilla Rakhimova fell in the second. The win over Rakhimova came in straight sets and saw her give up seven games. Parry isn’t a strong performer on hard courts and so far in her career has a losing record on the surface. Advancing to the third round has propelled the French number four up to 57th in the live ranking, a new career high.
