32nd seed Miomir Kecmanovic bids to reach the US Open third round for the first time. He takes on unseeded Richard Gasquet in the second round. A tough task lies ahead for the winner with the likely opponent being second seeded Rafael Nadal if he beats Fabio Fognini. Kecmanovic is the world number 36 but withdrawals see him take the last seeded position for the US Open. The Serb reached a career high ranking of 30th in June of this year. He's achieved his best ever Grand Slam performance in 2022 by getting to the fourth round in Australia. He's been consistent in Grand Slam events this year and reached the third round in both the French Open and at Wimbledon where he was beaten by Novak Djokovic. His best results since Wimbledon have been a semi-final in Los Cabos and beating Pablo Carreno Busta in Cincinnati before being knocked out in the last 16 by Jannik Sinner. The first round of this tournament saw him defeat wild card Learner Tiem in four sets after losing the first.

Richard Gasquet first played in a Grand Slam in 2002. The 36-year-old is now 91st in the world rankings and it's 15 years since he achieved a career high ranking of 7th. Gasquet has reached two semi-finals this year, one on clay and the other in a Challenger Tour event. He found some form last week on the ATP Tour with a quarter final in the Winston Salem Open. Three Grand Slam appearances this year have produced two second round losses and a third round at Wimbledon. He hasn't reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam since Wimbledon in 2016. He did reach the semi-finals in New York nine years ago but only reached the third round once in the last six years. He beat Taro Daniels in four sets in the first round, losing the second one. There's been one previous meeting between these two players. That was this year in the clay court Serbian Open with Kecmanovic winning and only losing three games. This will be a bit closer but it's Kecmanovic who can get the win.
