World number 41 Miomir Kecmanovic will take on Hubert Hurkacz, who is ranked 20th in the world, in the second round of the ATP Toronto Open on Wednesday. The winner of this match will go on to face either number one seed Carlos Alcaraz or Ben Shelton in the round of 16. These two have met just once in the past, back in 2019, and Kecmanovic won in three sets. The Serbian comes into this match following a tricky first-round encounter against qualifier Cristian Garin. After a close first set, Garin broke Kecmanovic twice to claim the second set, but the Serbian returned the favour in the third to claim the match. Kecmanovic has reached two finals and two semi-finals this year, the most recent of which came at Gstaad last month, though he is yet to claim his first title of the season. His record now reads as 20-21 for the year and 8-7 on the surface. Kecmanovic is the 3/1 outsider, according to the bookies. 

Meanwhile, the number 15 seed, Hubert Hurkacz, will be hoping to put on another solid run as he did at Wimbledon here in Canada. At the Grand Slam event, he reached the last 16 but was unable to overcome Novak Djokovic, who went on to finish as the runner-up. Hurkacz’s best performance of the year came back in February when he won the ATP event in Marseille, beating Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi in the final. Since then, he has consistently gone deep in the tournaments he has played, losing only once in the first round of the last 12 competitions. Hurkacz is now 26-16 for the year and 10-7 on the hard court, which is also his favoured surface. While his world ranking has taken a step backward, the Pole looked very good against Alexander Bublik in the opening round and is strongly backed to reach the last 16 in this one.
