Unseeded Mikael Ymer may not be the most popular man in France. He's already beaten two French players this week and now takes on Richard Gasquet in the quarter finals. Ymer is the world number 83 but up to 80th in the live rankings. The Swede is in his second quarter final of the year. He began 2022 with a run to the last eight of a tournament held in Adelaide but then had a tough draw in the Australian Open. He drew Stefanos Tsitsipas in round one and lost in straight sets. This week began with him beating Corentin Moutet in straight sets. Next up was a much stiffer task against third seeded Gaels Monfils but he won that for the loss of just four games. This is his third time in the Sud de France Open but his first quarter final.

Richard Gasquet began the week ranked 75th. That's way below the seventh place he achieved 15 years ago. He has risen 12 places in the world rankings this year after reaching the second round of the Australian Open. He beat fellow Frenchman Ugo Humbert in the first round but then retired against Botic van de Zandschlup when a set all and 4-0 down in the third. That's the only tournament he's played so far this year. The 35-year-old has won this title three times (the most recent being 2016) and lost in three other finals. A win in this match could see him face Alexander Zverev, who he lost the 2017 final to. This week, Gasquet has had another win over Hugo Gaston (in three sets) and Kwon Soo-woo in straight sets. He's had one previous match against Ymer with the Swede winning in three sets in Marseille two years ago. That shows Ymer has no fear of beating Frenchmen in France, back him to win this quarter final.
