The 2023 FIBA World Cup gets underway on Friday with Mexico taking on Montenegro for this Group D matchup. The structure for the Basketball World Cup is similar to that of the Football World Cup in that teams play three group games with the top two finishing teams advancing. Teams receive two points for a win and one point for a loss.
Mexico come into this group opener behind Lithuania and Montenegro as underdogs to advance from Group D. If they are to sneak a top two spot in the group, it will likely have to come at the expense of Montenegro. The Mexican national team sees almost their entire roster play in the domestic LNPB league apart from Francisco Cruz. The 33-year-old has played in the Lithuanian professional league as well as the Turkish league, last suiting up for Turkish team Manisa. The 1.91m shooting guard had a fine season for his club, averaging 17 points per game along with 4.4 assists. Cruz will be at the center of the Mexicans offensive game plan along with Gabriel Giron, who was the team’s second leading scorer in qualification. Mexico have won their last five consecutive outings with their most recent ending in an 84-77 win over the Philippines.
Montenegro will be expected to get the win in this opening game and they enter this contest as significant favorites. Montenegro aren’t in as good of form as their opponents today with only two wins from their last five. However, many of their recent contests took place against much tougher opposition including France and Slovenia. Montenegro won their most recent appearance 104-87 in a warm-up game over the Philippines. The Black Mountain will be looking towards Chicago Bulls star Nikola Vucevic to lead the way. The two-time NBA All-Star should have his way against a Mexican team short on quality big men. Alongside Vucevic, captain and two-time Eurocup winner Bojan Dubljevic is also expected to heavily contribute.
