Whoever does reach the last four will face either top seed Emma Navarro or unseeded opposition. Maya Joint has risen to 83rd in the live rankings, her first time in the top 100. The Australian won two qualifying matches to reach the main draw, only losing seven games.

The 18-year-old's good form has continued in the main draw. Julia Grabher and fifth-seed Donna Vekic have been beaten. Again, both wins were in straight sets and only eight games lost. This follows a run to the semi-finals in last week's Cancun Challenger event.

Elina Avanesyan is the world number 45 but up to 42nd in the live list. That's one place below her career-high achieved in January of this year. The Armenian is in her second quarter-final of the year. The other was in Hobart where she made it to the last four.

This week has seen her beat seventh seed Magdalena Frech (after losing set one) and Jessica Bouzas Maneiro.
