Matteo Berrettini, unseeded, makes his return to the tour on Tuesday when he faces another unseeded player Lorenzo Sonego at Wimbledon. The winner of this opening-round tie will play either 15th seed Alex de Minaur or qualifier Kimmer Coppejans in the second round. Berrettini makes his return to the tour against the same player he last played against. He lost 2-0 to Sonego three weeks ago in Stuttgart as he made his season grass-court debut. It was the fourth meeting between the two Italians and put to a halt Berrettini’s unbeaten run in the series. Berrettini has been plagued by injuries this season which has precipitated a dip in form. He has played 17 matches and has a record of nine wins and eight losses. The 27-year-old is a strong performer on grass and has several tour titles won on the surface. He also made it to the final at the All England Club in 2021. Berrettini starts the week ranked 36th in the live ranking.

Lorenzo Sonego is four places behind Berrettini in the ATP live ranking. He has been plagued by inconsistencies all through the season. The Italian has won 17 matches, the same number as he has lost. In his last match, he was eliminated in the first round in Eastbourne, suffering his third loss on grass in five matches. He will hope that Berrettini isn’t anywhere close to full fitness so as to make it back-to-back wins in this fixture. Sonego is making his fifth Wimbledon appearance. His best-ever result came in 2021 when he made it to the fourth round. Last season, he was eliminated in the third. Sonego is a decent performer on grass and has one title on the surface.
