Matteo Berrettini is the sixth seed at Indian Wells and takes on Lloyd Harris in the third round. The winner of this match takes on either Miomir Kecmanovic or Botic van de Zandschlup in the last 16. Berrettini has a poor record in this tournament but now has two unseeded opponents between him and his first Indian Wells quarter final. The Italian reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open earlier this year, losing in four sets to Rafa Nadal. Since then, he got to the last eight in Rio de Janiero, before losing his first match against Tommy Paul in Acapulco. This tournament has seen him beat qualifier Holger Rune in three sets, losing the middle set.

30th seeded Lloyd Harris is the world number 32 but this time last year was ranked 81st. The form shown in 2021 hasn't been on display this year. The South African lost his first five matches of 2022, including losing to Aleksandar Vukic in the Australian Open first round. His opponent was ranked 144th at the time. Harris did finally get a win when playing for South Africa against Israel in the Davis Cup. He beat the world number 661 Daniel Cuklerman but then lost to Yshai Olliel who was ranked 343rd. That made it a total of one win in nine games leading into Indian Wells. Form has improved this week with a three-set win over Facundo Bagnis. He's only had one previous meeting with Berrettini. That was at Roland Garros last year, with the Italian winning in four sets. Go for Berrettini to get the win over his struggling opponent in straight sets.
