Seventh seed Jannik Sinner begins his Canadian Open campaign on Wednesday with a second-round showdown with unseeded Matteo Berrettini. The winner will next face either Max Purcell, Lorenzo Sonego, Andy Murray, or Felix Auger-Aliassime in the third round. Matteo Berrettini began his second appearance in Toronto with a straight-sets victory over Gregoire Barrere in the first round. This was his first match in a month following his fourth-round elimination at Wimbledon. It allowed him to move one place up in the live ranking to number 37. The Italian has endured a topsy-turvy campaign which has also seen him plagued by injury. He has played 22 matches and compiled a 13-9 record. The majority of his victories, 13, have come on hard court and so too have seven of his defeats.

Jannik Sinner is also playing in Toronto after ending his grass-court campaign at Wimbledon. He managed a semifinal finish at SW19 which is his best-ever result at a Grand Slam. The Italian, ranked eighth in the ATP, will hope for the same fortune in what is his second appearance in Toronto. Sinner is having a strong season. He has won one title and finished as runner-up twice. His form has seen him win 37 of the 48 matches he has played with 14 of those victories coming on hard court. Sinner made his Toronto debut two seasons ago. He lost in the first round then and will hope the same fate doesn't befall him again.
