For the fifth Grand Slam in a row, Matteo Berrettini has reached the quarter finals. He bids to reach the last four at the US Open when taking on the fifth seeded Casper Ruud. The winner takes on either Nick Kyrgios or Karen Khachanov in the last four. Berrettini has only played one other Grand Slam this year and reached semi-finals in Australia. Injury and illness caused him to miss both the French Open and Wimbledon. He has won two titles this year and a win over Ruud will take him into his second US Open semi-final, the other being in 2019. Despite all his success, he's down to 14th in the rankings but is so much better than that. He lost all his points from reaching the 2021 Wimbledon final so that's why he fell out of the top ten. Casper Ruud is up to fourth in the live rankings and that's a career high. Winning this match takes him up to second behind Rafael Nadal and becoming US Open would make him the new number one. There's a lot of work to do to achieve that though. Ruud reached his first Grand Slam final at Roland Garros this year. He's had nothing like that success at other Grand Slams until this tournament. It's not been too tough a route to the last eight but he's been dropping sets and had to go to five to beat Tommy Paul in the third round. He's 3-2 up in previous meetings with Berrettini but lost to the Italian in the US Open in 2020. Their most recent meeting was in the 2022 Swiss Open with Ruud victorious but that was played on clay. Berrettini has more experience and looks to be in the slightly better form. Go for him to win this.
