World number 24 Matteo Berrettini takes on Alex Molcan in the Mexican Open first round. The winner of this match will face either fifth seeded Cameron Norrie or Adrian Mannarino in round two. Berrettiini has made a slow start to the new year. Only six matches have been played on the ATP Tour with three wins and three losses. All his wins came in the United Cup held in January. He showed some good form with wins over Hubert Hurkacz and Casper Ruud. He also took Stefanos Tsitsipas to a final set. In the Australian Open, the Italian lost a titanic five-setter against Andy Murray in the first round. This is his first tournament since that Grand Slam.

Alex Molcan has been slipping down the rankings. He's 57th in the latest iist. a drop of three places in the last week. He's not had a great 2023 and has won only two of his ATP Tour matches played this year. Last week saw him in Rio where he lost in the second round to Hugo Dellien in round two. He had beaten Joao Fonseca in the first round with only three games lost. However, his opponent was ranked 827th at the time. His only other win this year was in the Australian Open was a five-set victory over Stan Wawrinka in the first round of the Australian Open. That was another win over a player ranked outside the top 100 in the world.  Berrettini might be a bit rusty at first but can win this in straight sets.
