Unseeded Matteo Berrettini and 15th seed Alex de Minaur will on Friday meet in the second round at Wimbledon. Matteo Berrettini defeated fellow Italian Lorenzo Sonego in four sets in his opening-round match. It was his first win on grass this season. The former Wimbledon finalist has struggled with injury which has restricted him to only 18 matches thus far. Before arriving at the All England Club, Berrettini had gone almost a month without taking to the court. He will hope to stay fit as he seeks a second win against de Minaur. The two have played each other three times before, with Berrettini winning their only encounter on grass in London two seasons ago. The first round win over Sonego has moved him up one place to 37th in the live ranking.

Alex de Minaur is ranked 17th in the ATP. He also began his tournament with a four-set win over qualifier Kimmer Coppejans. This was his sixth win in eight matches played on grass and his 22nd win of the campaign. De Minaur has won on grass before and has this season also accomplished a runner-up finish on the surface. Last season he set his best-ever result here as he made it to the fourth round. He will be out to not only protect the points won then but to add some more. The Australian has won this meeting with Berrettini twice, his last success coming the last time they met in 2022. The winner here will set up a third-round showdown with either 19th seed Alexander Zverev or lucky loser Yosuke Watanuki.
