The third round of the 2023 US Open sees Mateo Arnaldi taking on 16th-seeded Cameron Norrie. A spot in the fourth round and a matchup against either top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz or 26th-seed Daniel Evans is on the line for the winner. Matteo Arnaldi has done well to advance to this stage of the competition, besting Jason Murray Kubler and Arthur Fils in the first and second rounds, respectively. The 22-year-old will now face his biggest test in Cameron Norrie who is ranked significantly higher than Arnaldi’s 61st-place ranking. The Italian is having an impressive 2023 and has already notched two tournament wins onto his belt. Arnaldi took down the Murcia Challenger and the Heilbronn Challenger events, both competitions which took place on clay surfaces. Arnaldi’s best work this calendar year has come on clay where he has 23 wins and seven defeats. On hard courts, however, he is just 15-11 and has some concerning losses.

Cameron Norrie has advanced to this stage of the competition in relatively comfortable fashion. The 28-year-old recorded straight set victories over 83rd-ranked Alexander Shevchenko in the first round and 237th-ranked Yu Hsiou Hsu in the second. It was a much-needed string of victories for Norrie who had entered this competition off the back of four consecutive defeats. Prior to this event, Norrie suffered a first round exit in the National Bank Open to Alex De Minaur and the Cincinnati Open to Gael Monfils. The British pro’s best performance this year came in Brazil where he would defeat current world number one Carlos Alcaraz to win the Rio Open clay event. On the year, Norrie is sporting a record of 34 wins and 16 defeats. This includes his current mark of 13 wins and seven losses on hard courts.
