Arnaldi defeated qualifier Christopher Eubanks in the first round. The Italian, who is debuting in this event, won in straight sets against the Atlanta native.

This was the second victory of a shaky start to the season. Arnaldi, who is placed 39th in the live ranking, has lost twice in four outings this year.

The 23-year-old did, however, defeat Davidovich Fokina last August in Montreal and will be confident of doubling his advantage in this fixture.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has had a more assured start to the year than Arnaldi. With this form, he will be confident of avenging the loss in Montreal seven months ago.

The Spaniard has won five of eight matches. Three of his victories were achieved at the Australian Open, leading to a fourth-round finish, his best-ever at the major.

Davidovich Fokina, who is also debuting in Dallas, started the competition with a straight-set victory. This was against the qualifier Brandon Holt. The 25-year-old is currently ranked 59th in the live ranking.
