The ATP Winston-Salem carries on at Wake Forest University with this round of 32 matchup between 14th-seeded Marton Fucsovics and unseeded Zhang Zhizhen. The winner of this encounter will progress to the final 16 and a match against either third-seeded Sebastian Korda or Benjamin Bonzi. The 31-year-old Fucsovics has experienced success on hard court surfaces already this calendar year, winning the Canberra Challenge tournament back in January. That triumph also represents the only final that the Hungarian has made this year as his next best finish was a recent semi-final appearance at Stuttgart. Fucsovics is coming off back-to-back defeats after being eliminated in the Cincinnati Open qualifying first round 2-0 by Alexander Shevchenko. The ATP 58th-ranked player is sporting a record of 27 wins and 19 defeats in 2023, 13 of which came on outdoor hard courts. This 58% winning percentage this year so far puts him right around his career mark of 57%. 

His opponent is 26-year-old Zhang Zhizhen who is looking for a win here to build some consistency. Zhang was able to get past Ilya Ivashka 2-1 in the previous round but will come into this matchup with the rest disadvantage. Fucsovics had a bye in the previous round, meaning this will be the first match the Hungarian plays in over a week. It hasn’t been the best of years for Zhang whose best finish in 2023 is a solitary semi-final appearance occurring on the clay courts of Hamburg in July. To make matters worse, the ATP 67th-ranked player had a really slow start on hard courts earlier in the year. Zhang suffered defeats in the first qualifying round of three consecutive hard court tournaments back in February. On the year, Zhang Zhizhen has seen his record fall below .500 with 24 wins and 25 losses.
