Marta Kostyuk takes on Maryna Zanevska in the first round of the Indian Wells tournament. The winner of this match takes on 20th seed Elise Mertens in the next round. Kostyuk is the world number 54 but was a career-high 49 last month. The 19-year-old reached the third round of the Australian Open this year beating Sara Sorribes Tormo (ranked 36th that week) before losing to Paula Badosa. Since then, she has qualified for tournaments in Dubai and Doha but lost in the first round of the main draw to players ranked higher than her. This is her second time at Indian Wells, she lost in round two last year.

Maryna Zanevska is the world number 68 which is a career-high position for the 28-year-old Belgian. The year began with her in 82nd place but it's still not been a great year for her. It started well with a run to the last 16 in the Melbourne Summer Set tournament in January. She beat Petra Martic in the first round, but then won just two games against Naomi Osaka. In the Australian Open, Zanevska reached the second round but then pulled out with an injury. Since then, she has failed to qualify for the main draws in Dubai and Doha. The Belgian has won two of her three previous matches against Kostyuk. Both wins came in 2018 and Kostyuk won the most recent one in 2019.  Back Kostyuk to get the win in this match.
