Marta Kostyuk is in her third successive appearance here and has set a new personal record by advancing to this round. She defeated compatriot Anhelina Kalinina in the first round in straight sets before bundling out lucky loser Taylor Townsend in three. The Ukrainian has now won three of the four matches she has played this season. This has bumped her up to 37th in the live ranking.
Jelena Ostapenko defeated Kostyuk the last time they met, which was four months ago in Guadalajara. It remains to be their only encounter and will have the Latvian confident of progressing from this round. Ostapenko has started the season strongly and has won four of the five matches she has so far played. This has allowed her to get back to the WTA top 10 and is ranked 10th in the live ranking. Ostapenko arrived to make her second appearance in Adelaide after making the quarterfinals in Brisbane. She defeated Caroline Garcia in three sets in the last round.
