Fourth seed Coco Gauff and unseeded Marta Kostyuk will square off in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. The winner will then proceed to play either Aryna Sabalenka or Barbora Krejcikova for a place in the final. Marta Kostyuk is having the Grand Slam tournament of her life. Before this season, the Ukrainian had never played beyond the fourth round at a major. Three times in Melbourne she had exited the competition in the third round. To advance to this round, Kostyuk dominated the qualifier Maria Timofeeva and lost just three games in their fourth-round tie. Cori Gauff has had an even better start to the year. The American is unbeaten in 2024 and has won all nine matches she has contested. Gauff, who is yet to drop a set at this competition, is also playing in the quarterfinals here for the first time. Unlike Kostyuk though, the 19-year-old is more experienced in the latter stages of Grand Slam tournaments. She is the reigning US Open champion and is also a former French Open finalist. Gauff defeated Magdalena Frech by the loss of three games in the fourth round. Only once has she lost more than three games in a match so far in Melbourne. She is now up one place to third in the live ranking.
