Marketa Vondrousova faces Rebecca Marino in the first round of the Indian Wells tournament. The winner of this match will take on the 28th seed Maria Bouzkhova in round two. Vondrousova is 105th in the latest world rankings but got into the main draw via a protected ranking, The former world number 19 (achieved four years ago) missed a lot of time on court due to injury last year hence her slipping down the rankings. This year has seen her take part in three tournaments with a best performance of a semi-final in Linz. Before that, the last eight was reached in the Adelaide International where she beat Ekaterina Alexandrova and Kai Kanepi (both in the top 32 at the time) before losign to Aryna Sabalenka. In the Australian Open, Vondrousova defeated the second seed Ons Jabeur in round two before bowing out to Linda Fruhvirtova in three sets in the following round. The 23-year-old is 32nd in the Live WTA Race based on points earned this year. The Czech has a good record at Indian Wells with a quarter final in 2019 and getting to the fourth round here iast year.

Rebecca Marino is the world number 75 but two places lower than that in the Live Race. The Canadian made a slow start to the new year winning just one of her first four matches. That included a first round exit in the Australian Open. The 32-year-old has only won two main draw matches on the WTA Tour this year. The first came in her opening tournament of 2023 and the second six tournaments later in Monterrey last week. That success came against Fernanda Contreraz Gomez who was ranked 176th at the time. The highest ranked player beaten by Marino this year is her possible second round opponent Marie Bouzkhova who the Canadian beat in the Doha qualifiers last month.
