WTA Montreal gets underway with ninth-seeded Marketa Vondrousova taking on unseeded Mayar Sherif. The winner of this matchup will take on either Caroline Wozniacki or Kimberly Berrill in the round of 32. The recently crowned 2023 Wimbledon champion Vondrousova has now cracked the top 10 WTA rankings with her 10th-place classification representing the highest of her career so far. The Czech made history last month, becoming the first unseeded player to win the Wimbledon women’s singles. She’ll now attempt to carry that momentum over onto the outdoor hard court’s of the National Bank Open. The win at Wimbledon means that Vondrousova enters this tournament currently riding an impressive seven match winning streak. Her most recent appearance was the 6-4, 6-4 straight sets victory against fifth-ranked Ons Jabeur in the final. The 24-year-old has a career winning percentage of 70.21% as a professional although sees that number drop to 63.77% when playing on outdoor hard courts.

Egyptian Mayar Sherif will have her work cut out for her if she is to cause an upset against the reigning Wimbledon champion. The 31st-ranked Sherif recently made it to the semi-finals of the Palermo Ladies Open where she would go on to lose 2-1 to Qinwen Zheng. Her most recent outing came in the Hamburg European Open where she suffered a 6-1, 6-1 straight sets loss in the first round to Eva Lys. This was a particularly disappointing result given it happened on a clay surface which is Sherif’s specialty. The 27-year-old has a career 74.77% winning mark when playing on clay with 222 of her 364 professional matches taking place on the surface. Sherif’s results on hard courts have left much to be desired as she has managed to win only three of the 10 hard court matches this year.
