Sixth seed Marketa Vondrousova and the unseeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova will square off in the third round in Doha. Vondrousova defeated the qualifier Greet Minnen in the second round by three sets. She lost the second set 6-0 highlighting that she is still yet to her normal best. The Czech number one is having a slow start to the year and currently has compiled a 2-2 record. The win over Minnen allowed her to advance to this round for the first time. Vondrousova has played in Doha twice before and is returning after a four-year hiatus. The current world number eight has defeated Pavlyuchenkova both times they have met with their last encounter coming three seasons ago.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is having an exciting start to the year. This has allowed her to inch closer to getting back to the WTA top 30 and is now ranked 31st in the live ranking. The 32-year-old has compiled a 10-4 record and has registered seven of her wins on hard courts. She defeated the in-form Daria Kasatkina in straight sets in the first round. In the second round, Marta Kostyuk was forced to retire during the first set of their contest. This left Pavlyuchenkova with ample time to prepare for this showdown with Vondrousova. Pavlyuchenkova, who is also through to the third round here for the first time, made the semifinals in Linz before arriving in Doha. The winner here will play either Katerina Siniakova or Danielle Collins in the quarterfinals.
