Recent winner of the Hangzhou tournament Marin Cilic takes on Arthur Cazaux in round one of the hard court Shanghai Masters. Read our match prediction below.

Cilic was only ranked 777th when he won the Hangzhou title. That’s the lowest ranking an ATP Tour title winner has ever had. The Croatian was the world number three in 2018 but had slipped that far down the rankings due to injury.

Last week saw the 36-year-old play in Tokyo and he was beaten in his first match, losing in three sets to Kei Nishikori. The Croatian is playing only his sixth ATP Tour event of the year. He hadn’t won on tour before that title success in Hangzhou.

Arthur Cazaux is at 92nd in the live rankings but was a career-high 74th in April of this year. The Frenchman is 88th in the Live ATP Race at the time of writing this preview.

His last tournament was the Nonthaburi Challenger Tour event and he was beaten in the quarter-finals, losing to James McCabe in three sets.

The 22-year-old has been struggling for form on hard courts in recent months. Only four of his ten matches on the North American tour were won and only two in main draws. He’ll be hoping to recapture the form he showed in the early part of 2024.

A hard court Challenger Tour title was won and he reached the last 16 of the Australian Open and in Dubai. He hasn’t won two successive matches in the main draw of an ATP Tour event in his last 14 tournaments. We tip Cilic to win this match.
