27th seeded Marie Bouzkova bids to cause another Italian Open upset. After being sixth seeded Coco Gauff in round three, the Czech now faces 11th seed Veronika Kudermetova. The winner will be up against either 22nd seed Zheng Qinwen or unseeded Wang Xiwu in the last 16. Bouzkova began this tournament ranked 38th but is up to 30th in the live rankings, so a seeding at Roland Garros is looking likely. It’s not been a great year on clay so far for her with the only quarter final being in an ITF tournament. Good form has been shown in Rome, though she had to come from a set down to beat Gauff.

Veronika Kudermetova made it to the last eight at Roland Garros last year, so is very comfortable playing on clay. A win over Bouzkova will see her in the Rome quarter finals for the first time. Kudermetova was in the top ten earlier this year but is currently 13th in the live rankings. Her clay court season didn’t start well with no wins recorded in either Charleston or Stuttgart. There was significant improvement in Madrid where the Russian reached the last four. World number three Jessica Pegula was beaten before losing to Iga Swiatek and winning just two games. This tournament has seen her win two matches and in the last round, Kudermetova beat 23rd seeded Anastasia Potapova in three sets, losing the middle one. These players are 2-2 in previous meetings but this is their first match on clay. Kudermetova looks to be in better form and can win this.
