At least two unseeded players will be in the quarter finals of the Monterrey Open. One will come from this match as Marie Bouzkova takes on Petra Martic. The winner of this tie faces unseeded Beatriz Haddad Maia in the last eight. Bouzkova is the world number 81, and went up 15 places in the latest list. That was a result of her run to the final in Guadalajara last week, losing to Sloane Stephens. That was her first tournament since losing in the second round of the Australian Open. This week has seen her continue her good form with a three set win over Sam Errrani. 

Petra Martic is ranked just four places below her opponent. That's well below the 14th place she achieved two years ago. This year hasn't gone too well for her as she began the year ranked 54th. The Croatian failed to win a match in either Melbourne or the Australian Open. The Croatian finally got a win when beating Kamilla Rakhimova (ranked 104th at the time) in the first round of the St Petersburg Ladies' Trophy but then lost to eighth seeded Elise Mertens in the second round. This week has seen her come from a set down to knock out third seeded Madison Keys. Martic hasn't reached a quarter final since May of last year. Bouzkova has been more consistent this year and can win this to make it to the last eight.
