Eighth seed Maria Sakkari will play unseeded Karolina Muchova in the first round of the French Open on Sunday. Sakkari is making her eighth appearance at Roland Garros. She made it to the semifinals in 2021 and will hope her form this season sees her go one better. The world number eight has won 20 of the 30 matches she has played with five of those coming on clay. This has seen her play four semifinals so far with the latest being in Madrid. Sakkari and Muchova have met three times before with Muchova winning twice on clay. The last time they played each other was last season in the second round of this same tournament.

Muchova will be confident of another win against Sakkari as she has won the last two matches between them. Her win last season saw her equal her best-ever result at Roland Garros. Muchova is making her sixth appearance here and will hope to set a new personal record and advance past the third round. The Czech number five has 19 wins from 26 matches with four of her victories coming on clay. She arrives here after her fourth-round elimination in Rome and starts the tournament ranked 43rd in the live ranking. The winner here will advance to play either wildcard Jessika Ponchet or the unseeded Nadia Podoroska in the second round.
