Iga Swiatek won the title at Roland Garros last year and is a strong fancy to successfully defend her title this year. The Pole, who has just turned 20, faces Maria Sakkari in the last eight. Whoever wins this will take on either Barbora Krejcikova in the last four. Gauff has won two titles since winning here last year. The most recent of those was in the Rome Masters and that form has been carried into this Grand Slam. No player has successfully retained the women's singles title at Roland Garros since Justine Henin and that was 14 years ago. Swiatek is yet to drop a set in this tournament with only 20 games lost in her four matches.

Maria Sakkari has seen her ranking climb to 18th this year and she's the 17th seed at Roland Garros. These two players are the only ones of the top 20 seeds still in the tournament. Sakkari is playing in her first Grand Slam last eight. On her day she can cause problems for the best in the game and has wins over Naomi Osaka, Garbine Muguruza and Cori Gauff (who she could meet in the semi-final). Two wins have come against Sofia Kenin, including one in the last round of this tournament.  Sakkari has beaten two seeds in this tournament, Kenina and also Elise Mertens. This won't be an easy match for Swiatek but if the Pole hits top form, she'll win the match with something to spare.
