Maria Sakkari takes on Iga Swiatek in the WTA Tour Finals. This lucrative end-of-season tournament is a bit different from the regular singles event. The eight qualifiers are split into two groups wih the top two qualifying for the semi-finals. That means whoever loses this opening Group Chichen Itza match, can still possibly qualify if winning their next two. The other players in this group are top seeded Aryna Sabalenka (Ashleigh Barty isn't playing this week) and recent Indian Wells champion Paula Badosa. Sakkari is the fourth seed but has yet to win a title this year. Only once in her last four tournaments has Sakkari failed to reach the semi-finals. That's included being losing finalist in Ostrava and getting to the last four of the US Open. Sakkari beat Swiatek in Ostrava and in their only other meeting, dethroned defending champion Swiatek at the French Open this year.

Iga Swiatek is the first player born in the 21st century to qualify for the WTA Tour Finals. The world number nine has won two tournaments this year, including the Rome Masters. Swiatek is seeded fifth for this tournament, earning just 15 points this year than Sakkari. October began with her ranked fourth in the world, she slipped down to 11th before getting back in the top ten. The Ostrava tournament is the only one of her last seven in which she's got past the last 16. Back the more consistent Sakkari to win this.
