Third seed Maria Sakkari will begin her San Diego Open campaign on Wednesday against the qualifier Camila Osorio. The two will battle in the second round with the winner next playing either Emma Navarro or Aliaksandra Sasnovich. Maria Sakkari arrives for her second appearance here after her disappointing first-round elimination at the US Open. The world number nine is struggling with her form at the moment. She has managed only one win in her last five fixtures and has lost on her last two outings. Losing in the first round here last season doesn’t make things better for her. But as she has the head-to-head advantage over Osorio, she will fancy her chances of progressing from this round. Sakkari defeated Osorio in their only other encounter last season in Nottingham. The Greek number one has had a lacklustre campaign compiling a 28-18 record. The majority of her wins, 16, have come on hard court where also most of her defeats have been suffered.

Camila Osorio is also having a rocky 2023 campaign. The Colombian has compiled a 26-16 record and has struggled the most on hard court. On the hard court surface, she has lost more matches, six, than the five she has won. Before arriving for her second San Diego appearance, Osorio had won just two matches all season on hard court. She has won her last three matches with the last coming in three sets against Magdelena Frech in the first round. The win allowed her to advance to this round for the first time. She is now up nine places in the live ranking to number 66.
