Unseeded Aliaksandra Sasnovich will seek to upset another top 20 player when she battles sixth seed Maria Sakkari on Thursday in Berlin. The winner of this second-round tie at the German Open will play either Jule Niemeier or Marketa Vondrousova in the quarterfinals. Maria Sakkari won her 22nd match of the season by defeating unseeded Alize Cornet 2-0 in the first round. This was the perfect start to her second appearance here where she will aim to eclipse last season’s semi-final finish. She has switched to grass gingerly as she has lost one of her three matches which was in Nottingham. The Greek number one is currently ranked eighth in the WTA.

Aliaksandra Sasnovich defeated world number 19 Victoria Azarenka to book this round and did it in straight sets. Azarenka is also a former semifinalist here in Berlin and this should have Sasnovich buoyed for this clash with Sakkari. The Belarussian has been in fine form on grass so far, winning four of the five matches she has played on the surface. This has allowed her to work towards turning her season around. Sasnovich has had a rocky year and currently has lost two more matches than she has won. This is her third appearance in Berlin where her best result was achieved last year as she made it to the quarterfinals. The 29-year-old is currently ranked 64th in the live ranking.
