Eighth seeded Marc-Andrea Huesler takes on unseeded Dominic Thiem in the second round of the BMW Open. The winner of this match will face either second seed Taylor Fritz or unseeded Marton Fucsovics in the last eight of this outdoor clay court tournament held in Munich. Huesler is on his debut appearance in Munich and endured a tough opening round against Kyle Edmund. The Swiss number one won the match against Edmund, ranked 509th in the world, in three sets (7-6, 4-6, 6-3) with the match taking more than two hours to conclude. His struggles in that match shed light on how he has struggled so far this season as he has lost more matches (11) than he has won (10). This form has had him drop in and out of the top 50. Dominic Thiem is also struggling this season and has won just five of the 16 matches he has played. He will be optimistic though of securing a win here as those five wins have all come on clay. Thiem is far from the player that he was when he made it to the final here back in 2016, a year that saw him break into the top 10 for the first time. A dip in form occasioned by a series of injuries as well as a battle with Covid-19, which saw him miss a chunk of the 2022 campaign, precipitated his drastic drop in the world rankings to out of the top 300.
