The qualifier Mai Hontama and the unseeded Katerina Siniakova will face off next at the San Diego Open. They will do battle in the first round with the winner playing Emma Navarro for a place in the quarterfinals. Mai Hontama has qualified for the main draw here without dropping a set in her two qualifiers. She defeated Dalma Galfi by the loss of 10 games in her last match. This was her sixth win in 10 outings this year which have all been on hard courts. The Japanese number two has now moved up to 115th in the live ranking. This is a new career-high WTA world ranking for the 24-year-old. Hontama is making her debut in this WTA 500 event.

Katerina Siniakova is also having a similar topsy-turvy start to the year. The Czech player has compiled a 7-6 record. Six of her wins have come on hard court but so too have five of her losses. Currently, on a two-match skid, the 27-year-old is coming off a first-round loss in Dubai. This was over a week ago and she will hope to have had enough rest to make a prolonged stay in this tournament. Siniakova made her Barnes Tennis Centre debut last season but was unable to go past the qualifying rounds. She is currently ranked 43rd in the WTA and can move back into the top 40 with a win here.
