Only once has Madison Keys made it to the final of a Grand Slam tournament and that was in last year's US Open when she lost to Sloane Stephens. Now she is only one match away from reaching the final again and perhaps finally winning her first Grand Slam event. It's been a good year for Keys who reached the last eight in Australia and the semi-finals at the French Open. She's only lost one set on her way to the last four, having to come back from a set down against Aleksandra Krunic. Two of her wins have come against fellow seeds but those ranked 29th and 30th.  Recently she beat Angelique Kerber so is in good form at present.

Before this tournament, Naomi Osaka had never made it past the fourth round of a Grand Slam event and she'd only done that once at this year's Australian Open. This is only her third time in the main draw of the US Open and she has only lost one set so far. In the third round she defeated her unseeded opponent without dropping a single game and only lost two in the quarter final. However, she's only beaten one seed so far and that was 26th seed Arya Sabalenka. Already this year she has won the Indian Wells tournament beating world number one Simona Halep on the way and defeated Serena Williams in Miami. She was knocked out of the French Open this year by Madison Keys and their only other meeting was in this tournament two years ago when Keys won 7-6 in the final set.
