Seventh seed Camila Giorgi faces unseeded Madison Brengle in the Nottingham Open first round. Giorgi will be hoping for a good start to her grass court season and perhaps even match getting to the last eight at Wimbledon five years ago. The Italian is 46th in the live rankings and has a bit of work on her hands to secure a seeding at Wimbledon. That might still be possible if repeating the grass court form shown last year. Giorgi got to the last eight in Birmingham and the semi-finals in Eastbourne. This year has seen her win a hard court tournament in Mexico. It hasn't gone so well on clay and at Roland Garros she retired after losing the first set of her second round match against Jessica Pegula. The return to grass should see some better results achieved.

Madison Brengle has defeated Camila Giorgi in this tournament. That was 11 years ago when the Italian was ranked 144th and Brengle the seventh seed. The American is 3-3 with her opponent in previous meetings with the most recent at Wimbledon in 2018. 33-year-old Brengle is currently 113th in the live rankings but began the year 57th. 2023 hasn't gone too well with ten wins and 14 losses compared to 14-10 for his opponent. Brengle lost in the first round at Roland Garros and entered the grass court tournament in Surbition. That didn't go well with a first round loss to Isabelle Lacy after winning the first set. That defeat made it three straight defeats for her. Number four looks to be on the way with a win for Giorgi being our prediction.
