Mackenzie McDonald and Miomir Kecmanovic, both unseeded, will battle each other in the first round of the Adelaide International tournament. The winner will then play either Sebastian Baez or Jack Draper for a place in the quarterfinals. Mackenzie McDonald was defeated in this very round in his opening tournament of the season which was in Hong Kong. He will be eager to not allow this to happen again. McDonald is making his third appearance here and only once has he advanced from the first round. This was last season but he was defeated in the very next round. The American has defeated Kecmanovic twice in their three career meetings though the last time they met was in 2017. McDonald is a decent performer on hard courts and last season won 23 matches on the surface. It was the third most matches he has managed on hard courts in a season. He is currently down one place to number 42 in the live ranking.

Miomir Kecmanovic is coming off a second-round finish in Hong Kong. He defeated Daniel Taro in the first round but was eliminated in straight sets by Frances Tiafoe in the second. He performed admirably against Taifoe and the second set of their duel required a tiebreaker to decide. His showing in the tournament should have him confident of a winning start here. Kecmanovic made his debut in Adelaide last season and made it to the quarterfinals. This was one of his few strong performances on hard courts as he struggled on the surface as he did the entire campaign. Finishing the season with a losing 28-31 record, Kecmanovic lost 13 of the 24 matches he played on hard courts. He is currently ranked 55th in the live ranking.
