Mackenzie McDonald, fourth seed, and unseeded Alex Michelsen will face off on Friday in the Hall of Fame Open quarters. The winner here will next play the winner of the match between top seed Tommy Paul and unseeded John Isner. Mackenzie McDonald is playing in Newport for only the second time ending a seven-year hiatus from the competition. He defeated the qualifier Li Tu in his opener to end a two-match losing run and claim his eighth victory on grass. McDonald has struggled all through the year and has won just three more matches than the 19 he has lost. The win over Tu has bumped him up five places to 54th in the live ranking.

Michelsen is making his debut in Newport and so far so good. He started the tournament by coming from a set down to defeat the defending champion Maxime Cressy. The American would follow that up with another come-from-behind win over James Duckworth. His strong start here has reflected on the live ranking where he is up to 165th, a new career high. Michelsen has been in fine form in 2023 and has won 40 of the 54 matches he has played. Six of his victories have come on grass. The 18-year-old is currently on a seven-match winning streak after arriving in Newport following his title run in the Chicago Challenger. He has played five finals this season in the ITF and Challenger circuits and has two titles.
