Qualifier Polina Kudermetova attempts to cause a second surprise in the WTA Brisbane International. The Russian faces her compatriot and 13th seed Liudmila Samsonova in round two of this outdoor hard court tournament. Read our match prediction below.

Kudermetova had to qualify to get into the main draw. Her two wins in qualifying and a first round victory over Xin Wang has taken her up to a career-high 100th in the live rankings. Only ten games were lost in her two straight sets wins in qualifying and another four in her first round win.

Most of 2024 was spent on the ITF Tour with three finals reached and one title won. Her best run on the WTA Tour was in the Merida Open in November where she got to the last four but didn't beat any top 80 ranked players.

Liudmila Samsonova is the world number 27 and won one WTA tournament in 2024 but that was on grass. Samsonova was consistent in the Grand Slams, getting to round three in all of them and the fourth round of the US Open.
