Seventh seed Liudmila Samsonova will hope to make a winning start in Adelaide when she battles Laura Siegemund in the opening round. The winner will go on to play Katie Boulter or Lesia Tsurenko for a place in the quarterfinals. Liudmila Samsonova is making her third appearance in Adelaide. Her best-ever finish here came two seasons ago during her debut as she made it to the quarterfinals. Last year she exited in the first round. This was the same fate the Russian suffered in her opening tournament of the year in Brisbane. Samsonova has so far in her career compiled a 98-55 record on hard courts. Last season she registered 25 of her 34 total wins on the surface and this resulted in three tour finals. She is currently ranked 15th in the WTA.

Laura Siegemund defeated Samsonova the last time they met. This was on hard court in Zhengzhou this past October. The win was her first in this fixture in what was their third career meeting. It will still be fresh in her mind and will have her confident of success here. Siegemund is making her season debut in Adelaide which is also the first time she is taking part in the tournament. The veteran German had one of her best tour campaigns last season. She finished with a 30-17 record and won 23 matches on hard courts. This allowed her to ascend to her fourth career tour final, ending a five-year wait for such an achievement. Siegemund is ranked 92nd in the WTA.
