Italian tennis player Lucia Bronzetti is having a great week at the Palermo Open. She takes on Elena-Gabriela Ruse for a place in the last four. Waiting for them in the semi-final will be either sixth seeded Oceane Dodin or Jaqueline Cristian. Bronzetti began the week ranked 190th and had to rely on a wild card to be playing this event. The week began for her by beating fifth seeded Viktoriya Tomova and only losing five games. That was followed by another convincing win as only four games were dropped when beating Greet Min. 2021 started with Bronzetti in 338th place but is up to 172nd in the live rankings and will go into the top 160 if winning this match. It’s her second WTA event quarter final in a row, after success in Lausanne last week.

Elena-Gabriela Ruse had to qualify to get into the main draw. That proved a straightforward task with only five games lost in two matches. This week began with her 133rd in the rankings and as a result of getting to this quarter final, the Romanian is up to 122nd. It’s been a big month for Ruse as last week she won the Hamburg European Open after having to qualify for the event. Three top 55 players were beaten on her way to the final where she beat world number 130 Andrea Petkovic. Once in the main draw of this event it’s been a straightforward path to the last eight. Mindy Minella was beaten in round one and then she had a walkover in round two when third seed Jil Tiechmann (who Ruse beat in Hamburg) withdrew. The Romanian is in good form and can get the win.
