Lucky loser Lucia Bronzetti and unseeded Anastasia Potapova will meet next at the Dubai Tennis Championship. They will square off in the second round with the winner battling either Qinwen Zhang or Nao Hibino for a quarterfinal berth. Lucia Bronzetti defeated Daria Kasatkina in three sets in the first round. This was her fifth win in 13 outings this year. Defeating the in-form Russian should have the Italian confident of prolonging her stay in this WTA 1000 event. Bronzetti, who lost her last qualifying fixture here, is in her debut appearance. The 25-year-old has moved up eight places in the live ranking to 52nd. She has suffered eight of her defeats on hard courts and is yet to win back-to-back matches.

Anastasia Potapova has won both times she has faced off with Bronzetti. Their last encounter was a year ago. Potapova also battled through three sets to win her first-round tie. This was against Zhu Lin and the Russian was forced to come from a set down to win. Potapova has had a more convincing start to the year than Bronzetti and has won six times in 10 outings. Four of her wins have come on hard courts and she has twice made the quarterfinals in the four tournaments she has contested. Potapova, who is now up to 32nd in the live ranking, made the last eight in her debut appearance here back in 2021.
