Cameron Norrie will play Lucas Pouille on Wednesday in the second round of the French Open. Pouille is recovering after a difficult four-year period struggling with illness. The Frenchman suffered a career-threatening elbow injury in 2020 that precipitated him going into depression. He seems to have put that all behind him though if his performances so far are anything to go by. Pouille has won 11 of the 17 matches he has played, with six of those wins coming on clay. He won his first main draw match at Roland Garros since 2019, beating lucky loser Jurij Rodionov in straights to reach this round. The win was his second at the tournament over Rodionov having defeated him in the qualifiers. Pouille and Norrie have met twice before and this encounter will be the second at the French Open. The two battled for four sets in this same round back in the 2018 edition with Pouille emerging victorious. The 29-year-old has boosted his world ranking with his exploits in Paris and is now up 279 places to 396th in the live ranking.

Cameron Norrie defeated Pouille the last time they met, which was in 2021 in the first round at Wimbledon. He will hope for the same outcome in his bid to set a new personal record at Roland Garros. Norrie has never gone past the third round here but equaled his best result last season. The Briton is having a decent season so far and has 28 wins from 38 matches played with 17 of those victories coming on clay. His form on the surface has seen him play two finals with one title won in Rio. The current world number 13 needed a deciding set to get the better of wildcard Benoit Paire in the first round. Advancing from this tie will set up a third-round showdown with either 17th-seed Lorenzo Musetti or the unseeded Alexander Shevchenko.
