World number 101 Luca Van Assche and world number 123 Denis Shapovalov will square off in the first round at the French Open. This will be the first career meeting between the two players. Luca Van Assche is back for a second time at Roland Garros. The young Frenchman made his debut last year and qualified for the second round. The 20-year-old has struggled with his form this season and arrives for this match with a 13-15 record. He has lost four times in six outings on clay and is yet to win more than two matches at a tour event. A junior French Open champion, Van Assche’s best result so far is a run to the third round at the Australian Open. Currently ranked 103rd in the live ranking, Van Assche is coming off a second-round exit in Madrid.

Denis Shapovalov is also struggling this year and has lost more matches than he has won so far. The Canadian has compiled a 9-13 record and hasn’t won more than three matches on a single surface. This however will be of little concern as he will bank on his experience to sail him through. A former ATP top 10 player, Shapovalov is a Grand Slam semi-finalist and Masters finalist. He has also made five appearances at Roland Garros, winning his opening-round tie three times. Last year, while also struggling with his form and fitness, he recorded a third-round finish. This stands to be his best result in this major. The 25-year-old lost in the second round in Geneva last time out and is up five places to 118th in the live ranking. The winner in this encounters will play Mattia Bellucci or Frances Tiafoe next.
