The soap opera that is the Los Angeles Lakers 2022/23 season continues when they take on the Denver Nuggets. The Lakers are the only team in the NBA that have yet to win a game as the Purple and Gold sit rock-bottom in the Western Conference with an 0-5 record. Their last game finished in a 111-102 defeat against the Timberwolves. On the other side, Denver has enjoyed a solid start to the new campaign with four wins from the first six games to put them seventh in the West in the early days of the season. The Nuggets last outing resulted in a 117-101 win over the Jazz and they will look to make it three wins in a row with their trip to Tinseltown.

Only one other time has a LeBron James led team failed to record a win after the first five games of the season. You’d have to go all the way back to his rookie year in 2003 on the Cavaliers, nearly 20 years ago which also goes to show how consistent the King has been over his career. This Lakers team has serious problems on the offensive side of the ball as they are getting very little production from anyone other than James and Anthony Davis. The team is shooting abysmally and it is very hard to win in today’s NBA when your squad is incapable of knocking down three-pointers. Denver, on the other hand, are one of the best shooting teams in the league at the moment percentage wise. They rank third in overall field goal percentage and second in three-point percentage.

To add to the Lakers’ problems, there is a chance they will be without star big man Anthony Davis after the 29-year-old sat out Friday’s loss to the Timberwolves. Davis missing out leaves a huge hole in an already thin Lakers squad and it’s difficult to see where their scoring will come from barring LeBron James dropping 50. Westbrook cuts a frustrated figure and one that clearly doesn’t want to be there; it also doesn’t help that he has started the season poorly as the fans now seemed to have fully turned against him. For the Nuggets, reigning MVP Nikola Jokic will look to have another monster game after going off for 31 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists when the two teams met a few days ago.

We’re going to back the Denver Nuggets to get the win and cover the -3.5 point spread in the process. It’s difficult to back this Lakers team at the momentum – they are not a well constructed squad and are absolutely anemic on the offensive side of the ball. LeBron James is still playing at a high level but there is only so much he can do at his current age. The possibility that Davis could miss out also makes this a more appealing play, although the Nuggets should still have little problems getting the victory even if the injury prone AD does suit up.
