Taylor Fritz takes on Lorenzo Sonego in the first round of the Paris Masters. The winner of this match has a tough task in the second round, with fifth seeded Andrey Rublev the opponent. Fritz begins this week ranked 26th in the world but had been as low as 42nd in August. He's been in good form of late and made it through to the final in St Petersburg last week. The American won four matches before being beaten in three sets in the final by Marin Cilic. That followed an even more impressive tournament at Indian Wells. He made it to the semi-finals of the Masters event, with wins over Matteo Berrettini, Jannik Sinner and Alexander Zverev, all currently in the top ten.

Lorenzo Sonego is ranked just one place below his opponent. The Italian has risen six places in the rankings this year but was as high as 21st last month. His form has dipped a little in recent months with only one quarter final in his last nine events. June saw him get to the final at the Eastbourne grass court event in England. Before that, Sonego reached the semi-finals of the clay court Rome Masters tournament. Recent weeks though have seen him win three out of seven matches. Twice he's been unlucky enough to draw in-form Casper Ruud. He's had four previous meetings with Ruud and the score is 2-2. The two wins that Sonego has had have both been on clay courts.
