Lorenzo Sonego vs Andy Murray Prediction & Betting Tips - Toronto, Canada
by Devesh Jaganath | in ATP Toronto Predictions
Lorenzo Sonego and Andy Murray, ranked 38th and 39th, respectively, will face off in the first round of the 2023 ATP Toronto Open on Tuesday. The winner of this match will take on either Felix Auger-Aliassime or Max Purcell in the next round. These two have met once in the past, which was earlier this year in Doha, and Murray won the match. Murray comes into this tournament following two second-round defeats at Wimbledon and in Washington last week. Since May, the Brit opted to compete mainly on the Challenger circuit, and that decision was justified as he earned three titles in the space of two months. The first came over Tommy Paul at the Aix En Provence event, the second was over Jurij Rodionov at the Surbiton tournament, and the most recent was in Nottingham when he overcame Arthur Cazaux. He is now 25-12 for the year and 9-6 on the hard court. Canada has been a good destination for the Brit, who has won this tournament on three occasions, though he will be tested to the limit in this one. Murray is the current favorite with most bookmakers.
Meanwhile, Lorenzo Sonego is still in search of his first title for the year and comes into this tournament off the back of a semi-final appearance in Umag. In that tournament, he overcame Marco Cecchinato and Jaume Munar in the first two rounds but was knocked out by number six seed Stan Wawrinka in the penultimate match. That was also his best finish of the season to date. Sonego's record this season is in the negative territory, currently 19-20 overall and 6-7 on the hard surface. Over the last six tournaments he has competed in, the Italian has only gotten past the second round on one occasion. Sonego has only competed in this competition once in the past and lost in the opening round to Ugo Humbert in 2021. He will likely rely on his big-hitting ability but may struggle against an in-form Murray.
