Seventh seed Jannik Sinner and his Italian compatriot, 16th seed Lorenzo Musetti will on Friday face off for the second time when they clash in the quarterfinals of the ongoing Monte Carlo Open on an outdoor clay court. Both players are making their third appearance at this Masters 1000 tournament and are seeking to advance to the semifinals for the first time. Musetti earned the biggest win of his career when he defeated world number one Novak Djokovic in three sets to advance to this round. The 21-year-old dug deep to come from a set down to win the contest 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. This should give him the needed momentum to seek a first win over Sinner in their second career meeting. Musetti had struggled all season before arriving in Monte-Carlo and had won just six matches, the bulk of which coming in his season debut at the United Cup. He advanced to his career-high ranking of 18th after his heroics to help Italy reach the final of that tournament but his subpar performances after that saw him drop out of the top 20 again. He is currently ranked 20th in the live ranking and can set a new career record by moving up to 17th with a win on Friday.

Jannik Sinner is having his best start to a season which has seen him claim one title (Montpellier) and reach the final of two other tournaments (Rotterdam and Miami Open). This form has also allowed him to move to his career-high ranking of eighth in the world. He will be confident of his abilities to win here as his last three losses have come against top five players in Daniil Medvedev (twice) and Carlos Alcaraz. Sinner is making his season debut on clay (a surface that has seen him claim one of his seven career titles) in Monte-Carlo and has won his two matches with one set dropped. His first match saw Diego Schwartzman retire during the second set and in his following match, he came back from a set down to defeat 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz. Sinner has made it to at least the semifinals in his last four tournaments and coupling this with the fact that he has won against Musetti before, a win here for him is highly likely. The winner here will book a last-four showdown with either third seed Daniil Medvedev or sixth seed Holger Rune.
