Lorenzo Musetti is ranked below his opponent Benoit Paire but is the favourite to reach the Monte Carlo Masters second round. Musetti is 83rd in the live rankings but unlike his opponent, his ranking is going in the right direction. He reached the quarter finals in this month's clay court tournament held in Marrakesh and that included beating Albert Ramos Vinolas. That was the third quarter final that the Italian has reached this year. His form on clay has included three titles won on the Challenger Tour and reaching the fourth round at the 2021 French Open. That run at Roland Garros saw him go two sets to love up on Novak Djokovic before eventually retiring in the fifth. Any performances like that will see him do well.

Benoit Paire is down to 61st in the live rankings. He's only 132nd in the ATP race that is based on points earned in 2022. His form has been poor with only two of his 11 matches on the ATP tour won this year. Both of those came in the Australian Open when making it to the last 32 before losing in four sets to Stefanos Tsitsipas. His only win since then was over a player ranked below 300 in a Challenger Tour tournament. Paire played in three clay court events in South America this year but lost all his matches. He has won three ATP Tour clay court tournaments, the last being in 2019. Seven previous Monte Carlo Masters appearances have seen Paire lose in the first round four times. His only previous match against Musetti saw the Italian win last year. Go for Musetti to get a win against an out-of-form opponent.
