Liam Broady, seeded 10th, and unseeded Jelle Sels will meet on Wednesday in the US Open first round qualifier. Broady arrives for his fifth appearance at the US major after his semifinal finish in the Winnipeg challenger. The Briton has been in fine form lately. He will hope this rubs off here as he seeks to reach the main draw for the first time. Broady has won seven of his last 10 fixtures and also made it to the semifinals of the Cary challenger. His record for the season stands at 33-19 with 14 of those victories coming in 20 outings on hard court. Coupling this with the fact that he has the head-to-head advantage over Sels, he will be confident of a win here. Broady defeated Sels in their only encounter to date in Orlando on hard court in 2018. Ranked 107th in the live ranking, a career-high, Broady has managed one title in the challenger circuit.

Jelle Sels has had a turbulent 2023 campaign and has managed only three victories in 20 outings. He is yet to win a match on hard court and arrives here having lost his last eight fixtures. Sels made his hard-court season debut in his last match which was in Grodzisk Mazowiecki in the challenger circuit. He lost in straight sets to a player ranked more than 200 places below him. Sels is currently ranked 199th in the live ranking. His last eight matches have all ended in straight-set defeats. The 28-year-old is making his US Open debut. Sels enrolled in qualifying at Roland Garros and Wimbledon and was eliminated from both in the first round. The winner of this match will play either wildcard Tristan Boyer or unseeded Jesper de Jong next.
