Eighth seed Leylah Fernandez and the unseeded Tatjana Maria will square off in the first round of the San Diego Open. Leylah Fernandez hasn’t lost a first-round match this season. She will hope this remains the case as she seeks to tie this series with Maria at 1-1. The Canadian, who has won six of the 10 matches she has played, is coming off a second-round exit in Dubai. It was a disappointing result as she had made the quarterfinals in Doha just days prior. The 21-year-old is making her third successive appearance in this WTA 500 event. She has never won a main draw match here and lost in the first round every time. The former world number 13 has moved up one place to 32nd in the live ranking.

Tatjana Maria is having a topsy-turvy campaign and has so far lost more than she has won. The German has compiled a 5-6 record and has suffered five of her defeats on hard courts. But as she has defeated Fernandez before, she will be confident of making a winning start here. The two battled in the quarterfinals in Cleveland last season with Maria winning in straight sets. In her last four outings, Maria has managed just one win. She is also coming off a second-round exit in Dubai. The 36-year-old is currently up seven places to 47th in the live ranking. The winner here will play either Lin Zhu or a yet-to-be-determined qualifier for a place in the quarterfinals.
